What Manner of Citizens!... And The Way Forward.
Judging by the reaction of a lot of Nigerians from yesterday's botched elections, it is obvious a majority of us were hoping it would fail.
My friend who called me informing me of the postmonment spoke with so much glee in his voice. If Don Jazzy were at his side, he would have released a club banger called "I told you so"
What is with Nigerians and proving we cannit get it right? Is it a thing of pride or what?!
What have you done to ensure that thse elections work despite the fact there are some people around that will do any thing to ensure these elections and Nigeria fail.
Nigerians are acting like they are doing INEC a favor by participating in the elections. I am hearing people say "After wasting my time blah blah..." , "Abegi, who go come out tomorrow".
Let me just say this, the greatest weapon election riggers have is apathy. And the intersting thing is it cannot be taken by force, it is giving willingly. just show a little apathy, and they will do the rest.
Let me clear one thing that will make a lot of people happy to continue reading JEGA IS AT FAULT!
Are the blamers happy now? How does it move us forward? When a ship looks like it is about to capsize do you look for whom to blame or try to get the damn ship to sabilize?
The way forward
I do not think that tomorrow's Monday is feasible because of the logistical nightmare it will cause for people that have not planned for this scenerio. Parties, observers, and regular everyday people. I heard there are examinations due on Monday, etc.
The next feasible date is Saturday the 9th which has already been planned for elections by everyone. We can either
- Combine the national Assembly with the Presidential Elections (ACN Proposition)
- Hold The NASS on Saturday, Pesidential on Wednesday and Guber as planned (CPC)
- Move everything by one week. NASS to Presidential Date, Presidentail to Guber Date then Guber to the Next Saturday 23rd of April (My guy Od's plan)
I will go with the CPC's plan (Disclaimer: I support Buhari) here is my reasoning.
- Od's plan cannot work because that will fall on easter weekend. The disruption will just be too much.
- The ACN one is a good option but the stake of the presidential election is just so much that people might want to focus squarely on it.
- The CPC option will mean a disruption on a weekday. Is that too much to ask?
I will go a step further and ask that the week of 11-15th should be decleared a public holiday. I do not think it is too much to sacrifice for credible elections. We can hold ALL elections within that week and be done with it once and for all.
I am certain the Ivorians would wish that could go back in time and make any sacrifice necessary for a smoother election ourcome.
The stake in Nigeria is much higher and anything less than a 'PERCEIVED' free election will be a disater for US ALL. Thieves and good citizens alike.
If JEGA wants anothe 10 billion, we should give it to him; anothe week, let him have it. After the election, he and every INEC official must be held to account.
Let us make every humanly possible sacrifice to make this election a success.
Nigeria is in stormy waters, when everything stabilizes, we can go ahead to accuse, blame, insult everybody's father. until then, we should not lose sight of out goal
Free and Fair electios.
I beg you, do not give in to apathy because the battle is just getting started.
What are your suggestions on moving forward?
